Turkey is just around the corner!!

Well, I could have posted this idea sooner...sorry, but you can use it next year. :) The day after Halloween we did a countdown to Thanksgiving (I got this idea from a magazine). We made a turkey and on each of his feathers was a number counting down to Thanksgiving. On the back of each feather is a clue (which my daughter loves to say at lunch now..."Momma, cue, cue") as to where one piece of their Halloween candy is hiding in the house. They love using the clue to find their candy and it helps stretch the candy out so they don't consume it all at once.

Won't be long and we'll be starting down our Christmas countdown chain! Each day will be something fun for the kids to do (paint ornaments, bake cookies for someone, etc.) I love traditions! If you have any great ones to share, please do! :)

I love the Thanksgiving idea!

Something Mitch & I have done since our college years is the 12 days of Christmas. We try to do something special for the other each of those days, whether it be a special snack or treat, a gift, a date, anything really. This year with Emmit (b/c he's old enough now to comprehend stuff) we're doing something special for a child at an orphanage a missionary family runs (our church supports them). I'm also thinking about taking him to a nursing home to give out homemade something or other to those who don't have family, toys for tots, snack bags for the neighbors on our street. We don't want E to get
"wrapped up" :) in the materialism of the holiday. It can be such a wonderful time of selflessness & showing love to God through showing love to others.

Christian Book Distributor has a book about the Advent (mixes fun w/ truths) for children that looked really helpful. Not sure of the title but you would probably be able to find it on their website.

Thanks Carissa! Great ideas! We did a very small thing and helped my m-i-l fill a shoebox that she wrapped. Her church was collecting them for an orphanage I believe that their church supports. Any ideas though to teach children to be generous during this time is great. thanks for sharing!! :)
